Uncharacteristic proportions of high severity fire over the area burned,
particularly in the last decade, has been a common theme in the megafires that
have occurred throughout the Sierra recently. The following metrics
characterize, map, and quantify some of the factors that contribute.

The Fire Severity Element is described by two metrics in the RRK: annual burn
probability and probability of high severity fire. The current condition of
the Fire Severity Element is represented by the probability of high severity
fire metric. Condition scores range from +1 to -1 representing more favorable
to less favorable conditions, respectively.
